Hull City begin Premier League return with decisive win over Manchester United
Hull City marked their return to the Premier League with a fully deserved 2-0 victory over Manchester United at MKM Stadium, as goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy gave the promoted side an ideal start to life back in the top flight.
Hull had last been relegated from the Premier League in 2017. The club’s decline continued three years later when they dropped into League One, but their recovery began in the middle of 2025. Last season, they secured promotion back to the Premier League through the play-offs.
Their opening fixture immediately presented a major test against Manchester United, but Hull quickly showed they were ready to compete at the highest level. The home side played with confidence and intensity from the outset, while United struggled to create a meaningful response.
United started new signing Youri Tielemans, with Joshua Zirkzee and Marcus Rashford among the substitutes. Rashford had returned from FC Barcelona and was introduced at half-time as manager Michael Carrick looked for a way back into the match.
Hull took the lead after 17 minutes. A corner was not cleared properly by Manchester United and the loose ball fell perfectly for defender Semi Ajayi, who needed only to turn it into the net.
The visitors were unable to respond before the interval, and the atmosphere inside the MKM Stadium became even more impressive shortly before half-time. Hull doubled their advantage from a well-delivered free-kick, with Nobel Mendy rising to head the ball beyond United goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
Carrick sent Rashford on at the break, and Manchester United subsequently enjoyed most of the possession. However, control of the ball did not lead to a steady flow of clear chances. Hull remained disciplined without it and looked particularly threatening when they broke forward, creating several opportunities to extend their lead.
The United manager then replaced Andrey Santos with Benjamin Sesko, adding another forward in an attempt to reduce the deficit. Hull’s defensive organisation, though, continued to frustrate the visitors and prevented them from finding a route back into the contest.
The final stages were about resilience for the hosts. Sergey Jakirovic’s side protected their clean sheet and completed an important victory over one of English football’s historic elite clubs on their first Premier League appearance since their return.
For Manchester United and Carrick, the defeat in Kingston upon Hull provides plenty to consider before their next league fixture. They will have the opportunity to respond at home next week when another promoted team, Ipswich Town, visit Old Trafford.
Hull’s attention now turns to cup football. They return to action on Tuesday, when Stoke City will be their opponents in the second round of the League Cup.
