BREAKING NEWS: Hervé Renard set to resign from role as Tunisia head coach after World Cup elimination
Tunisia head coach Hervé Renard is expected to step down following the Carthage Eagles’ final Group F match against the Netherlands at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to multiple reports in Tunisian media.
The 57-year-old Frenchman, who took charge in the midst of the tournament, is reportedly set to announce his resignation after Tunisia’s final group-stage fixture on June 26.
Renard was appointed as an emergency replacement after Sabri Lamouchi was dismissed following Tunisia’s humiliating 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening match.
However, the managerial change failed to spark a revival, as Tunisia suffered another heavy loss, falling 4-0 to Japan in Renard’s first game in charge.
The defeat confirmed Tunisia’s elimination from the World Cup, ending their campaign at the group stage.
Tunisian newspaper Al-Sabah reported that Renard’s departure is all but certain, running the headline: “As expected, Renard will not continue as national team manager.”
While initial reports suggested that the Tunisian Football Federation would hold a post-World Cup review meeting with Renard to determine his future, local media now claim that the federation’s lack of a clear long-term vision has prompted the French coach to walk away.
Another leading publication, La Presse, also indicated that Renard’s tenure is nearing its end, describing the upcoming clash against the Netherlands as his final match in charge of the national team.
The newspaper did not spare the Tunisian Football Federation from criticism, describing the country’s World Cup campaign as “a great disappointment” and urging officials to prioritize rebuilding both the technical staff and the national team.
Tunisia will now look to salvage pride in their final group match against the Netherlands before beginning what appears to be another period of transition.
