Ayyoub Bouaddi Impresses for Morocco at World Cup 2026

Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi’s impressive World Cup debut against Brazil has earned praise from Lille president Olivier Létang, who insists the teenager’s emergence on the global stage is simply a continuation of the progress he has shown in recent years.

Bouaddi was one of Morocco’s standout performers during the Atlas Lions’ opening match of the 2026 World Cup, producing a composed display in midfield as his side secured a draw against Brazil.

The 18-year-old attracted widespread attention for his ability to control possession, dictate the tempo of the game and compete confidently against one of the tournament favourites.

However, according to Létang, those performances have come as no surprise to those who work with him at Lille.

In an interview with Le Site Info Sport, the Lille president said the midfielder’s development has followed a clear trajectory over several seasons.

“Regarding Ayyoub’s development, it’s not a surprise. When you observe his progress over the last three years, there’s nothing astonishing about his current level. He’s destined to reach the very highest level.”

Létang believes Bouaddi’s display against Brazil reflected the level he has regularly produced for the French club.

“Against Brazil, he played a relatively normal match compared to what he regularly produces with his club. However, I am surprised that the world is only discovering him now.

If you had seen his match against Real Madrid on October 2, 2024, his 17th birthday, you wouldn’t be surprised by his current performances. We see him working every day. Beyond being a footballer, he is an extremely intelligent young man with whom I have a special and very close relationship.”

The Lille president also highlighted the player’s potential and urged him to remain focused as his profile continues to grow.

“I can say that he still has a great deal of room for improvement. His future is ahead of him. He simply needs to remain humble and keep his feet on the ground in order to continue to achieve great things.”

Bouaddi’s performances for both club and country have inevitably attracted attention from across Europe, leading to speculation about his long-term future.

Despite that interest, Létang made it clear that Lille’s intention is to keep the Moroccan midfielder at the club.

“This interest is nothing new given Ayyoub’s performances over the last two seasons. We extended his contract until 2029 last December. Lille plays in the Champions League and, at 18, there’s no better place for him to continue his development. So the idea is for him to stay with us next season.”

The comments underline Lille’s determination to retain one of their most promising talents, even as Bouaddi’s reputation continues to grow following his strong start to the World Cup.

For now, the young Moroccan remains focused on helping the Atlas Lions progress in the tournament, while his club continues to view him as a key part of its future plans.
