Morocco defender Nayef Aguerd disappointed after missing World Cup

Morocco defender Nayef Aguerd has expressed his disappointment after being ruled out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while pledging his unwavering support for the Atlas Lions as they prepare to begin their campaign without one of their defensive stalwarts.

The former West Ham United centre-back will not feature at the global showpiece in North America after failing to recover fully for the tournament. Aguerd joins Abdessamad Ezzalzouli on the sidelines, with both key Moroccan players forced to miss the World Cup due to injury setbacks.

The 30-year-old had been working tirelessly to regain fitness and secure a place in Morocco’s squad, but after consultations with the coaching and medical staff, the difficult decision was made to prioritise both his recovery and the team’s interests.

“First of all, I would like to thank you for all the messages of support I received this morning. They deeply touched me,” Aguerd wrote.

“Unfortunately, I will not take part in this World Cup. This is not a relapse. On the contrary, I am feeling better and better day by day, and my injury is now behind me.”

The defender explained that although his rehabilitation had progressed positively, he had not yet reached the physical level required to compete at the highest level during the tournament.

“Together with the staff, we felt that my current performance level was not yet sufficient to help the team in the way I would have wanted during the group stage,” he added.

“Despite all the efforts made in recent weeks, it became clear that I would not be 100 per cent physically ready for the start of the competition. This decision was made in agreement with the staff, in the best interest of the team and the competition.”

Aguerd also reserved special praise for those who supported him throughout his recovery journey, including officials of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation and the medical team that worked around the clock to help him return to action.

“A big thank you to the president of the Federation for providing everything needed from the first day until the last to help me recover,” he said.

“I would also like to thank Dr. Christophe Baudot, as well as the entire medical staff, for their support, both medically and mentally.”

The former Rennes defender admitted that the past season had been one of the most demanding of his career, both physically and psychologically, and despite giving everything to return before the World Cup, time was simply not on his side.

“This season has been particularly demanding, physically and mentally. I tried, as best as I could, to give everything to return in time and get back to my best level. Unfortunately, it was not possible within the required timeframe.”

Aguerd’s absence is a major blow for Morocco, given the crucial role he has played for the national team in recent years. He was instrumental in the Atlas Lions’ historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where Morocco became the first African nation to reach the last four of the competition.

Renowned for his leadership, composure and defensive quality, Aguerd was expected to be a key figure once again as Morocco sought another memorable World Cup campaign.

Despite the disappointment, the defender remains fully behind his teammates.

“Of course, it is a disappointment, but I accept it with clarity and responsibility,” he stated.

“From now on, I will be the national team’s biggest supporter. I wish my teammates great success in this World Cup. May they make us proud.”

Aguerd concluded by reaffirming his bond with Moroccan supporters, insisting he would be cheering on the Atlas Lions every step of the way.

“I am a national team player, but above all, I am also a supporter. And I will be behind them, just like you. Thank you again for your support.”

His heartfelt message has been met with an outpouring of support from fans, who have praised his professionalism and commitment to the national cause. While Morocco will undoubtedly miss one of their most experienced defenders, Aguerd’s focus is now on supporting the team from afar as they chase World Cup glory.
