Marwan Attia backs Egypt for positive start against Belgium as Yasser Ibrahim relishes World Cup dream
Egypt midfielder Marwan Attia has backed the Pharaohs to make a strong start to their World Cup campaign against Belgium, while defender Yasser Ibrahim has described his inclusion in the national team squad as the fulfilment of a lifelong ambition.
The two players shared their thoughts ahead of Egypt’s opening Group G fixture, expressing confidence in the team’s ability to compete on football’s biggest stage.
Speaking to MBC Masr, Attia said participating in the World Cup was a dream he had carried since childhood. Although he has previously featured in the Club World Cup, the midfielder insisted the senior international tournament represents a completely different challenge and achievement.
“It’s a dream I’ve had since I was young,” Attia said, adding that representing Egypt at the World Cup ranks among the greatest moments of his career.
Looking ahead to Monday’s clash with Belgium, Attia expressed optimism about Egypt’s chances, citing the national team’s recent performance against Spain as evidence that the Pharaohs can compete with top opposition.
He predicted Egypt would avoid defeat, suggesting either a 2-1 victory or a 1-1 draw against the European side.
Attia also spoke about the opportunity to share the pitch with Mohamed Salah, describing it as one of the personal goals he had always hoped to achieve in football. He further revealed his admiration for former Egypt star Mohamed Aboutrika, saying he would have loved the chance to play alongside the iconic midfielder.
The midfielder reserved special praise for veteran playmaker Abdullah Said, applauding the 41-year-old’s continued impact and professionalism.
“Abdullah Said has maintained a high level for many years and remains an important player for the team,” Attia noted.
He also paid tribute to players who narrowly missed out on the final World Cup squad, including Mohamed Shehata, Mostafa Mohamed and Ahmed El-Shenawy, describing them as exceptional professionals who had contributed significantly to the national team setup.
Meanwhile, Ibrahim echoed Attia’s excitement about competing at the World Cup, describing his selection as a proud moment in his career.
The defender said he had dreamed of representing Egypt at the tournament since childhood and viewed the opportunity as a tremendous honour.
Ibrahim highlighted the difference between the Club World Cup and the FIFA World Cup, noting that the latter brings together the strongest national teams and presents a unique level of competition in every match.
He credited head coach Hossam Hassan for keeping the squad focused and motivated, revealing that the former Egypt striker frequently shares memories from his appearance at the 1990 World Cup to inspire the current generation.
According to Ibrahim, Hassan regularly reminds the players of Egypt’s footballing history and the responsibility that comes with representing the nation on the global stage.
The Al Ahly defender also had words of encouragement for players who were omitted from the final squad, urging them to continue supporting the team despite their disappointment.
He expressed confidence that Egypt possess the quality and determination required to achieve positive results during the tournament.
Egypt begin their Group G campaign against Belgium on Monday before facing New Zealand in their second match. The Pharaohs will conclude the group stage with a clash against Iran as they seek a place in the knockout rounds.
