World Cup stars race back to Europe as 2026-27 season kick-off dates confirmed

European football will roar back into life just weeks after the 2026 World Cup, with a packed restart schedule that will see the continent’s major leagues resume between late July and the end of August – and African fans are already bracing for a hectic return for their international heroes.

The Scottish Premiership will be first out of the blocks, launching the 2026-27 campaign on 31 July, before a cascade of kick-offs sweeps across Portugal, Belgium, the Netherlands, Turkey, Spain, England, France, Italy and Germany over the following month.

For supporters across Africa, whose stars have just shone on the global stage, the resumption of domestic football will be closely watched as players switch from national duty back to club colours.

Europe’s top leagues lock in return dates

After several weeks dominated by the World Cup, clubs are now counting down to the reopening of their national championships.
