Rio Ngumoha buzzing after historic England debut

Liverpool winger Rio Ngumoha has captured hearts and headlines after making his senior England debut, becoming one of the youngest players in the nation’s storied history.

At just 17 years and 281 days old, Ngumoha stepped onto the pitch during England’s 1-0 friendly victory over New Zealand, playing the second half and cementing his place as the fifth-youngest player ever to wear the Three Lions jersey.

The momentous call came unexpectedly while he was at home. FA director John McDermott reached out, inviting him to join the training squad in Miami ahead of the pre-camp. Ngumoha immediately accepted, arriving with an open mind and ready to contribute.

Describing the experience, Ngumoha said, “I’ll say it was a crazy feeling. I was happy, I was buzzing. I knew from when we had the meeting before that it was a first-half team and a second-half team so I was preparing”.

He added that he wasn’t overly nervous, just eager to play and show what he could do. “I just wanted to play and just show everyone what I could do. And yeah, I just had fun,” he said.

Training alongside world-class players, Ngumoha learned daily how sharp, skilled, and humble they all are. He emphasized that footballers are normal people who connect well off the pitch.
