Celtic manager opens up on Kelechi Iheanacho's future

Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has opened up on the future of Nigeria international Kelechi Iheanacho following an impressive impact.

Iheanacho, who joined Celtic as a free agent after last summer’s transfer deadline, has enjoyed a strong campaign, making a significant impact off the bench and delivering crucial goals. His latest contribution saw him net his third match-winning goal in the league, further strengthening his case for a longer stay.

Despite his performances, uncertainty remains over his future, with his current contract set to expire at the end of the season. However, Celtic retain an option to extend the deal by an additional year.

Speaking on the situation, O’Neill suggested that while the club values Iheanacho’s contributions, his long-term role will largely depend on his fitness levels and ability to undergo a full pre-season programme.

“If the club were to keep him, then it’s really to do with a proper pre-season for him, a real proper pre-season,” he said.

The manager pointed to Iheanacho’s late arrival as a key factor affecting his overall conditioning this season, noting that the striker did not have the benefit of structured preparation before joining the squad.

“I think he arrived at the last moment here, so he would have to do it, and I think that he would benefit greatly from that, where you’re getting three or four weeks’ work into him before the season started, which I think he needs,” O’Neill added.

The remarks suggest that while Iheanacho has proven his quality and importance in decisive moments, the club is keen to assess how he can perform with a full pre-season behind him before committing to his future.

As the season draws to a close, all eyes will be on Celtic’s next move regarding the Nigerian forward, whose impact has been undeniable but whose long-term place in the squad remains under evaluation.
