Yaya Toure guides Slovan Bratislava into Champions League group stage in landmark coaching feat

Yaya Toure has become the first African coach to lead a club into the group stage of the UEFA Champions League after Slovan Bratislava secured a place in the competition’s main phase.

The Slovak champions completed the achievement with a 2-1 victory over Slovenian side Celje in the second leg of their play-off tie. That result gave Slovan Bratislava a 3-2 aggregate win across the two matches and confirmed their progression among Europe’s leading clubs.

The milestone marks a significant moment in Toure’s first managerial post. The former Manchester City and FC Barcelona midfielder only took charge of Slovan Bratislava during the summer, but has already delivered one of the most notable results of his early coaching career.

Toure, who won 101 international caps for Cote d’Ivoire, is now set to take his place on the Champions League stage as a manager after making his name as one of Africa’s most accomplished midfielders. His side’s qualification gives him an immediate opportunity to test his coaching abilities against the elite of European football.

Before Toure’s achievement, Nigerian coach Ndubuisi Emmanuel Egbo had been the first African manager to lead a club in the Champions League. Egbo guided KF Tirana in 2020, although the Albanian club did not progress beyond the qualifying rounds, according to Prime Video Sport.

The match follows the club’s successful Champions League play-off campaign and will give Toure an opportunity to maintain momentum in the domestic competition.
