Egypt women complete perfect group stage with straight-sets win over Uganda

Egypt’s women’s national volleyball team reached the knockout stage of the African Women’s Championship with a perfect record after beating Uganda 3-0.

The victory was Egypt’s third in a row in Group B and confirmed their progress from the group stage with maximum points. They opened the tournament by defeating Burkina Faso before overcoming Senegal in their second match and Uganda in their final group fixture.

Egypt controlled the contest against Uganda throughout, winning 25-14, 25-9, 25-16 to complete a convincing straight-sets success.

The team will now wait to discover their opponent in the next round. The top two teams from each group advance to the quarter-finals.

Kenya is hosting the women’s African Championship, which runs until 5 September. Egypt were drawn in Group B alongside Uganda, Burkina Faso and Senegal.

The other groups are made up of the following teams:

– Group A: Kenya, Mali and Zambia – Group C: Cameroon, Nigeria, Tunisia and Ghana – Group D: Rwanda, Algeria, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burundi

The tournament carries added significance because the African champion will qualify directly for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Egypt finished runners-up at the previous edition of the competition in 2023. Their last appearance in the African Championship final before that came in 2003, when they won the title for the third and final time.

Their unbeaten start means Egypt remain in contention to reclaim the continental crown, while their next challenge will be determined once the quarter-final line-up is finalised.
