CAF unanimously backs Gianni Infantino for FIFA Presidency re-election as Global support grows
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has thrown its full weight behind Gianni Infantino, endorsing the incumbent to seek re-election as president of FIFA for the 2027–2031 term.
The decision was reached during a CAF meeting held on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, in Vancouver, Canada, on the eve of the 76th FIFA Congress.
According to an official statement, all CAF Member Associations were aligned in their position.
“The CAF Member Associations unanimously agreed to support Gianni Infantino to be re-elected as President of FIFA for the period 2027–2031.”
CAF’s endorsement follows a similar move by South American football’s governing body, CONMEBOL, which became the first confederation to publicly declare support for Infantino’s continuation in office three weeks ago.
The CONMEBOL Council unanimously backed the Swiss-Italian administrator for another four-year term, reinforcing growing global momentum behind his leadership.
Although Infantino, 56, has not yet formally announced his candidacy, expectations are high that he will seek re-election.
Since assuming office in 2016, he has overseen sweeping changes within FIFA, including competition reforms and expanded global tournaments.
His previous re-elections in 2019 and 2023 came unopposed, underlining his firm grip on football’s global governing body.
CAF’s unified stance is particularly significant given Africa’s voting strength within FIFA. With 54 Member Associations, the continent represents a crucial bloc in any presidential election.
The latest show of support from both Africa and South America signals a strong early foundation for Infantino, should he officially enter the race for another term at the helm of world football.
