Morocco set to secure Borussia Mönchengladbach talent Wael Mohya
Borussia Mönchengladbach prospect Wael Mohya is set to represent Morocco at international level after reportedly deciding to switch his sporting nationality from Germany.
The 17-year-old attacking midfielder, regarded as one of the most promising young players in Borussia Mönchengladbach’s academy, is understood to have chosen the Atlas Lions following discussions with the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF).
According to reports, negotiations between the player and the Moroccan federation have reached an advanced stage, paving the way for Mohya to begin a new chapter in his international career.
If the process is completed, the teenager will become the latest dual-national player to commit his future to Morocco instead of the country he previously represented at youth level.
Before making his decision, Mohya progressed through Germany’s national youth system, representing the country from the Under-16 to the Under-18 age groups.
His performances in German youth football earned him recognition as one of the country’s emerging talents, with the German Football Association continuing to monitor his development.
However, the midfielder has now reportedly decided that his international future lies with Morocco.
The move reflects the ongoing efforts of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation to recruit talented players of Moroccan heritage who are developing their careers in leading European academies and clubs.
In recent years, Morocco has intensified its work with members of the diaspora, seeking to strengthen the national team by convincing eligible dual-national footballers to represent the Atlas Lions.
Mohya’s reported decision is viewed as another positive outcome for that strategy.
The attacking midfielder is highly regarded at Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he continues to develop within the club’s youth ranks.
His technical ability and potential have seen him emerge as one of the academy’s brightest prospects, making his international decision an important development for both Morocco and Germany.
For Germany, the reported switch represents the loss of another promising youngster who had already featured in its youth national teams.
For Morocco, meanwhile, it offers the prospect of adding another talented young player capable of contributing to the country’s long-term ambitions.
Although the formal process is yet to be completed, reports suggest Mohya’s commitment to Morocco is now close.
Should the switch be finalised, the Borussia Mönchengladbach teenager will join a growing group of dual-national players who have chosen to continue their international careers with the Atlas Lions as Morocco continues to strengthen its future generations of talent.
