Abdoulaye Faye eyes Senegal senior breakthrough
Abdoulaye Faye’s growing reputation in European football continues to take shape as the Senegalese defender reflects on his development, early setbacks and long-term ambitions, including a clear desire to break into the national senior team.
The 21-year-old centre-back, a product of the respected Diambars FC academy, has steadily worked his way through the European football ladder after spells with BK Häcken and Bayer Leverkusen.
He is currently gaining top-flight experience on loan at FC Lorient, where he is beginning to establish himself in Ligue 1.
Faye’s progress has not been without difficulty. A serious injury early in his European journey forced him out of action for several months, testing both his resilience and mentality during a crucial stage of his career.
“At first, it was a bit tough for me because I was coming back from injury. I was out for five months with a fractured metatarsal. But little by little, I adapted,” he said in an interview with L’Observateur.
His return to fitness marked a turning point, as he quickly adjusted to the intensity and technical demands of elite-level football. Exposure to higher competition, he admits, reshaped his understanding of the game almost immediately.
“After my first real match, I thought, ‘Wow!’ The level is very high, and there’s also the intensity.”
Working under coach Olivier Pantaloni at Lorient, Faye credits the tactical discipline and mentorship he has received for accelerating his development, particularly in defensive positioning and game reading.
“I had weaknesses in my positioning, but I’ve improved a lot in that area. The coach helps me tremendously; he mentors me like a father.”
Beyond the pitch, family support has played a central role in his journey, especially the influence of his father, Pape Ibrahima Faye, a former Senegal U17 coach.
“He’s my first coach. After every match, he’s the first person I call. He tells me what I need to correct.”
Internationally, Faye remains ambitious, having previously won the WAFU U17 Championship in 2021 with Senegal. His long-term focus is firmly fixed on representing the senior national team while continuing his club progression.
“Representing your country is a wonderful thing. If it happens, great, if not, I’ll keep working. But playing for the national team is something we all dream of.”
So far this season, Faye has featured in 14 Ligue 1 matches, helping Lorient remain competitive in mid-table with 41 points from 31 games as his European education continues.
