Arteta rules out Arsenal reinforcements for now despite Alvarez links
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says he is happy with his current squad and does not believe the club needs to make further additions at present, despite reports linking the Gunners with Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez.
Arteta was speaking after Arsenal began their Premier League campaign with a convincing 3-0 victory over Coventry City in the opening round.
Asked by Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo about the possibility of signing Argentina international Alvarez, Arteta highlighted the quality and potential already available to him at Emirates Stadium.
“I am very happy with the team I have now. I think we have a wonderful group of players, and there is a lot of potential within the team. My aim is to develop the players we have and improve their level,” he said.
Arsenal have been linked with Alvarez by Spanish media, with reports suggesting Atletico Madrid would not object to a transfer. However, the player is said to prefer a move to Barcelona.
Arteta did not completely close the door on further activity before the transfer window ends, but made clear that his immediate priority is working with the players already at the club.
“We will see what happens in the transfer market, but I am extremely happy with what we have at the moment. We are focused on improving the team and developing our players, and that is the most important thing for me,” he added.
The manager’s comments come as Arsenal look to build on a highly successful previous season. The club won the Premier League title after finishing seven points clear of runners-up Manchester City.
Arsenal also opened the new campaign by lifting the Community Shield, defeating Manchester City 3-0 in the traditional season-opening fixture.
Their next Premier League assignment will be away to Aston Villa on Monday. The match will be played at Villa Park, where Arteta’s side will seek to maintain the momentum created by their emphatic opening victory.
For now, the Spaniard’s public position is that Arsenal’s focus should remain on improving the squad already in place rather than pursuing another major signing. His praise for the group, combined with his emphasis on developing existing players, suggests the club is not treating the reported interest in Alvarez as an immediate priority.
The striker’s future remains a subject of attention in Spain, particularly because of the reported possibility of a move to Barcelona. But Arteta has chosen to stress his satisfaction with Arsenal’s current options and the significant potential he believes exists within the team.
