Riyad Mahrez opens up on retirement ahead of World Cup
Algerian superstar Riyad Mahrez has addressed growing speculation about his future, refusing to commit to retirement as he continues to chase more success with Al-Ahli Saudi FC.
The Algerian winger is preparing to lead his side into a high-stakes final against Japan’s FC Machida Zelvia in the AFC Champions League, with his immediate focus firmly on adding another continental title to his collection.
Speaking ahead of the clash, Mahrez made it clear that retirement is not currently on his mind. “I still have some goals and I am striving to achieve them this season, especially with Al-Ahly, and we are currently thinking about winning the AFC Champions League title for the second time in a row.”
World Cup Could Shape Final Decision
While speculation continues about whether the Algeria national team star could step away from football after the FIFA World Cup 2026, Mahrez suggested that any decision will come later.
“I am only thinking about the final right now, and after this match, there are important commitments at the level of the Roshan League, and participation in the World Cup, and then I can talk about my future, whether to continue or retire.”
His comments leave the door open, with the World Cup potentially serving as a defining moment in his career timeline.
Ambition Still Burning
Despite being in the latter stages of his career, Mahrez insists his hunger for success remains strong. The former Manchester City star expressed pride in representing a club of Al-Ahli’s stature while setting his sights on more trophies.
“I am very happy to be in a club the size of Al-Ahly, and I look forward to achieving more championships. The most prominent goal at the moment is to win the continental title.”
He also emphasised that the domestic title race is far from over, maintaining belief in his team’s chances while prioritising continental success.
“From my point of view, the league is not over yet. Al-Ahly has a chance to win the title without a doubt, but we must focus on Asia first.”
Experience Driving a New Approach
Mahrez highlighted a shift in mentality within the squad, pointing to growing experience as a key factor in their current campaign.
“That doesn’t mean we’ve lost our passion, but the experience factor has started to rise among most of the players, and that’s what’s most important.”
As he reflected on his career, the Algerian star took pride in his achievements at both club and international level, underlining the importance of the Asian title in his journey.
“I am proud of the titles I have achieved in my career, whether with clubs or the Algerian national team, and the Asian Championship is one of the most important championships for me.”
Future Still Unwritten
For now, Mahrez’s future remains undecided. With major competitions still ahead, including a potential World Cup appearance, the veteran winger is focused on adding to his legacy before making any final call on retirement.
