Nigeria midfielder Alex Iwobi has apologised following his late red card in the Super Eagles’ 2-2 draw with Jordan, admitting his actions were unacceptable and taking full responsibility for the incident.

The Fulham player was sent off near the end of the international friendly played in Turkey on 31 March after reacting angrily to a hold by Jordan’s Amer Jamous.

His dismissal came in the closing stages of the match, overshadowing what had otherwise been a competitive encounter between the two sides.

Speaking afterwards on a podcast, Iwobi acknowledged his mistake and addressed both his teammates and supporters.

“I have to take responsibility for what I did and apologize to all my Nigerian teammates, the staff, and everyone who supports Nigeria. My actions were unacceptable, and I was sent off ,” Iwobi said.

The incident occurred following an altercation with Amer Jamous, during which Iwobi reacted after being held by the Jordanian player.

The referee subsequently issued a red card, bringing an abrupt end to the midfielder’s involvement in the match.

Despite the dismissal, the match itself ended in a 2-2 draw, with both teams sharing the points after an evenly contested fixture.

The result ensured that Nigeria avoided defeat, although the focus shifted to the sending-off in the aftermath.

Iwobi reflected on the situation and indicated his intention to improve moving forward.

“But I will learn from this and move forward. We drew, we didn’t lose, so we will take the positives. I want to apologize for this mistake ,” added the Fulham FC player .

His comments underline a recognition of the impact such incidents can have on the team, particularly in international fixtures where discipline is closely scrutinised.

By addressing the issue publicly, the midfielder sought to draw a line under the episode and reaffirm his commitment to the national side.

The Super Eagles used the friendly as part of their preparations for upcoming fixtures, with the match providing an opportunity to assess performance and cohesion.

While the draw offered positives, the red card introduced an element of concern regarding discipline on the pitch.

Looking ahead, Nigeria are scheduled to return to action in June, when they will face Poland and Portugal in further friendly matches.

These fixtures are expected to provide additional preparation time as the team continues to build towards future competitions.

Iwobi’s response suggests a determination to move beyond the incident and contribute positively in upcoming matches.

His acknowledgement of responsibility and apology to teammates and supporters highlight the importance placed on accountability within the squad.

Although the draw against Jordan will remain part of Nigeria’s recent results, the focus now shifts to future performances.

For Iwobi, the episode serves as a reminder of the fine margins in international football and the need to maintain composure under pressure.
