Morocco defender Chadi Riad has suffered another injury setback just weeks before the national team begins preparations for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The Crystal Palace centre-back was forced off during his side’s Premier League match against Everton on Saturday after experiencing pain in his knee while attempting to block an opposing player’s shot.

Riad left the pitch on a stretcher in the 72nd minute and was replaced by Japan international Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Concern after long injury absence

The incident has raised concerns at Crystal Palace and within the Moroccan national team, particularly because Riad had only recently returned to competitive football following an extended period on the sidelines.

The defender had spent around 430 days unavailable because of recurring knee problems before making his return.

Palace have not yet disclosed the nature or severity of his latest injury, with further medical examinations required to establish the extent of the problem and his potential recovery period.

Morocco monitoring situation closely

Riad’s injury comes at a crucial time for Morocco coach Mohamed Wahbi, who is preparing his squad for the upcoming 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

Wahbi and his coaching staff are closely monitoring the fitness of several players, particularly those dealing with injuries or returning from lengthy absences.

The national team is expected to hold a preparatory camp between September and October as the coaching staff finalise their plans for the next stage.

Wahbi waits for medical assessment

The Morocco coach will continue to monitor Riad’s condition in the coming days while awaiting the results of his medical tests.

The diagnosis will determine whether the defender can make a quick return or faces another extended spell out.

Wahbi is also preparing alternatives in different positions to guard against potential absences as Morocco’s continental commitments approach.

For now, Riad’s situation remains uncertain, with the Moroccan coaching staff hoping that the latest injury is not serious enough to rule him out of the upcoming national-team fixtures.
