Rulani Mokwena assembles backroom staff ahead of Al-Ittihad unveiling
Rulani Mokwena is set to take the helm at Libyan side Al-Ittihad Tripoli, bringing with him a strong South African contingent to bolster his technical team ahead of his new adventure.
Joining Mokwena will be coaches Sinethemba Badela and Wendell Robinson, along with several staff members who have worked with him across Africa.
Badela, previously with Durban City FC and Chippa United, was unattached before reconnecting with Mokwena, while Robinson was part of Mokwena’s setup at MC Alger this season.
Mokwena is expected to formally assume his new role in the coming days, following his departure from MC Alger after eight months guiding them to success.
He leaves the Algerian club at the top of the league, motivated by both a lucrative contract and the freedom to assemble his own backroom staff—a key factor in his decision.
The transition to Libya has not been without complications. Mokwena faced a brief travel hold in Algeria due to foreign currency regulations but was cleared to leave on Monday, flying via Turkey to join his new team.
Al-Ittihad moved quickly to secure his services, paying four months’ salary to MC Alger—two months as per contract and an additional two as a goodwill gesture.
Mokwena steps into an ambitious project, with the Libyan club actively strengthening its squad. Notable signings include attackers Thembinkosi Lorch and Aziz Ki, with more reinforcements expected in the upcoming transfer window.
Additional members of Mokwena’s trusted circle, such as performance analyst Sbu Makitla and masseur Thabiso Moshane, will also join him, having collaborated previously at clubs including Mamelodi Sundowns and Wydad Athletic Club.
The South African coach has reportedly signed a long-term deal and is tasked with transforming Al-Ittihad into a leading force in African football.
Mokwena has currently coached Mamelodi Sundowns, Wydad Athletic Club, among other clubs.
