South African coach Mokwena arrested in Algiers airport hid undeclared cash in his shoe
South African coach Rulani Mokwena’s departure from MC Alger has been overshadowed by reports that he was arrested at Algiers airport after security officials allegedly discovered thousands of dollars hidden among his personal belongings.
The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday evening when the former Mamelodi Sundowns coach was completing departure procedures at the Algerian capital’s main airport.
According to local sources in an exclusive revelation to AfricaSoccer.com, airport security officials became suspicious after noticing what they described as unusual behaviour while Mokwena was going through travel formalities.
Their suspicions prompted a detailed search, which allegedly uncovered a significant amount of undeclared foreign currency.
The report said approximately USD16,000 was discovered during the inspection, raising concerns among authorities that the money had not been officially declared before travel, as required by local financial regulations.
What drew particular attention during the search, according to the same reports, was the manner in which the money had been concealed.
The source indicated that the cash had been hidden in unconventional locations among Mokwena’s personal belongings.
Among the places where the money was reportedly found were inside the coach’s shoe and between the pages of a book he was carrying at the time.
Authorities are understood to have launched an investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the discovery of the funds, including whether the case involves a breach of financial regulations or attempted smuggling.
The reports suggested that the discovery prompted officials to take immediate legal steps while further inquiries were conducted.
The development came at a time when Mokwena’s tenure with Mouloudia Club of Algiers (MC Alger) had already come to an end.
The Algerian club confirmed that the South African coach had officially left his role after a contractual clause allowing termination of the agreement was activated. According to the club, the clause allows either party to end the contract upon payment equivalent to two months’ salary.
Mokwena joined MC Alger on 21 July 2025, taking charge of one of Algeria’s most prominent football clubs as they sought to strengthen their domestic and continental ambitions.
During his time in charge, the coach oversaw 25 matches, recording 16 victories, seven draws, and only two defeats.
Those results represented a strong run of form during his brief spell with the club and reflected the positive impact he made after arriving in Algeria.
However, his departure now coincides with the airport incident, which has quickly become the focus of attention surrounding the South African tactician.
While the club confirmed his exit through contractual provisions, the investigation into the undeclared funds may determine the next developments regarding the case.
Authorities are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the money and whether any financial regulations were breached.
For Mokwena, who has built a growing reputation in African football coaching circles, the situation marks an unexpected twist in what had been a largely successful stint with the Algerian side.
The outcome of the investigation is now likely to determine how the situation unfolds in the coming days.
