Angola cancel pre-World Cup friendlies against Iran, Jordan over Middle East unrest
The Angolan Football Federation has cancelled the national team’s scheduled international friendlies against Jordan and Iran this month due to the escalating unrest in the Middle East.
Angola were expected to face the two nations in friendly matches in Dubai later in March. Both Jordan and Iran have already secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States.
In a statement, the federation explained that the worsening security situation in the region forced officials to reconsider the trip.
“The aggravation of the current conflict in the Middle East and the consequent instability that is felt in the region meant a serious, prudent, and responsible re-evaluation,” the statement said.
Officials added that attempts were made to salvage at least one fixture, particularly the match against Jordan.
However, after reviewing the financial commitments, logistical demands and administrative requirements, the federation determined that playing only one friendly would not provide sufficient competitive value for the national team.
As a result, Angola will not participate in any matches during the March international window.
The Palancas Negras failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup and will next return to competitive action in September when qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations get underway.
