Derrick Bonsu has completed a move to Slovak side FC Petržalka from free agency, sealing a contract that runs from 2026-03-06 to 2027-06-30. The 24-year-old Ghanaian defensive midfielder joins the MONACObet liga club on a free transfer after a brief spell without a team, arriving with a current market value of €50k.
The transfer marks Bonsu’s return to Slovak football, where he previously represented Železiarne Podbrezová and FK Pohronie. FC Petržalka have taken advantage of his free-agent status, paying no transfer fee to secure a player with experience in both Slovakia and Kosovo, where he most recently played for FC Drita before his contract there ended and he became unattached at the start of the year.
Bonsu, who stands 1.80 m tall and operates primarily as a defensive midfielder, has built his career across several European leagues rather than in his home country of Ghana. After developing in Spain with Real Valladolid U19, he moved to Loja CD, also in Spain, before heading to Slovakia with Železiarne Podbrezová in 2022. A loan switch to FK Pohronie in early 2023 was later made permanent, and he then left Pohronie as a free agent in mid-2024. A stint with FC Drita in Kosovo followed in early 2025, with his market value peaking at €100k during that spell before dropping to €50k by the end of that year.
His latest move to Petržalka ensures he will again be playing abroad, competing in the Slovak second tier rather than in any domestic Ghanaian competition. The MONACObet liga club gains a right-footed midfielder whose profile has steadily risen from a modest €10k valuation at Podbrezová in late 2022 to a six-figure peak before his value adjusted downward during a turbulent period of short-term deals and free-agency spells.
The Ghanaian has been on a nomadic trajectory over the last few seasons, switching clubs frequently but consistently remaining within professional European structures. Each transfer — from Real Valladolid U19 to Loja CD, then to Podbrezová, on loan and permanently to Pohronie, back into free agency, on to FC Drita, and again into the free-agent pool — has added another layer of experience in differing tactical and competitive environments.
By signing with FC Petržalka, Bonsu gains stability and an opportunity to re-establish his value and form in a league he already knows. The contract gives both player and club a defined window in which to assess the partnership, while leaving open the possibility that he could again become a free agent once the deal expires if no extension or subsequent transfer is agreed.
For Petržalka, bringing in a 24-year-old with prior Slovak and Kosovan top-flight exposure represents a low-risk, potentially high-reward addition to their midfield options. For Bonsu, the move offers a clear platform to rebuild momentum in European football, with the prospect that a strong season in the MONACObet liga could restore or surpass his previous peak valuation and shape the next phase of his career.
