Egyptian Premier League: Zamalek SC edge Pyramids FC to go clear at the top of standings

Zamalek strengthened their grip on the Egyptian League summit after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Pyramids at the Air Defense Stadium in Round 20 of the competition.

The decisive moment arrived in the 60th minute when Hossam Abdel-Maguid calmly converted from the penalty spot, handing the White Knights three crucial points in a tense contest.

The win lifted Zamalek to 40 points at the top of the standings, three ahead of Pyramids, who remain second on 37 points. Al Ahly SC sit third, level on points with Ceramica Cleopatra FC but separated by goal difference.

Although Pyramids enjoyed greater possession and territorial advantage for much of the encounter, Zamalek carried the sharper attacking threat, particularly on swift counterattacks.

The league leaders created several clear chances that could have widened the margin, but profligacy in front of goal kept the scoreline narrow. At the other end, Zamalek’s resolute defensive display, anchored in front of goalkeeper Mohamed Sobhi, frustrated Pyramids’ repeated attempts to break through.

Elsewhere in the same round, ENPPI SC claimed a dramatic 3-2 victory over Al Masry SC. ENPPI found the net through Ahmed Khalil Kalusha from the penalty spot in the 34th minute, Mohamed Hashem’s own goal in the 53rd minute, and a late winner from Emad Mahyoub deep into stoppage time at 90+15.

Al Masry’s goals came via an own goal from Hisham Adel in the 17th minute and a strike by Osama Al Zamrawi in the 44th minute. The result moved ENPPI up to 24 points in 11th position, while Al Masry remain fifth with 29 points.

In another entertaining fixture, Smouha SC defeated National Bank of Egypt SC 3-1. Smouha’s goals were scored by Samir Fikri in the 11th minute, Samado in the 40th minute, and Khaled El Ghandour in the 51st minute.

Ahmed Abdel Hamid Mahyoub’s own goal in first-half stoppage time accounted for National Bank’s consolation. Smouha now sit sixth with 28 points, while National Bank remain ninth on 25.

Meanwhile, Modern Sport FC were held to a 1-1 draw by Petrojet SC. Modern Sport struck early through Rashad Metwally in the third minute, but Petrojet rescued a point thanks to Rashid Ahmed’s late equaliser in the 90+6 minute. Petrojet move to 25 points in 10th place, with Modern Sport on 23 points in 13th.
