Al Ahly are expected to avoid heavy sporting sanctions following the incidents involving their supporters during the goalless draw against AS FAR in the final round of the CAF Champions League group stage.
Regulations expert Amer Al-Amayreh has weighed in on the situation, suggesting that the Egyptian club is unlikely to be punished with a fan ban during the knockout phase of the competition.
Speaking in radio statements, Al-Amayreh explained that the anticipated sanction will most likely be limited to a financial fine.
The match, played on Sunday, ended in a scoreless draw but was marred by regrettable scenes both inside and outside the stadium, prompting widespread condemnation.
Despite the seriousness of the events, Al-Amayreh noted that this was the first incident of its kind involving Al Ahly’s supporters, a factor that is expected to result in a more lenient disciplinary response.
He added that harsher measures, including a ban on fans attending matches, would only come into effect if similar violations occur again in the future.
According to his assessment, the most likely outcome is a suspended sanction preventing fans from attending two matches, alongside an immediate financial penalty, in line with the competition’s disciplinary regulations.
Meanwhile, the Confederation of African Football has strongly condemned the incidents that occurred during the encounter between the Egyptian and Moroccan sides.
In an official statement published on its website, CAF described the events as “unacceptable” and confirmed that the matter has been referred to the Disciplinary Committee to open an urgent investigation and take appropriate action against those responsible, in accordance with the rules governing the tournament.
