Super Eagles defender Bright Osayi-Samuel has opened up about his personal journey and the factors that shaped his decision to pledge his international future to Nigeria, despite growing up in England and being eligible to represent the Three Lions.
Born in Okija, Nigeria, to Nigerian parents, Osayi-Samuel relocated to England at a young age, where he spent 14 formative years. Although his football education and professional development took place in England, the full-back insists his bond with Nigeria was never severed.
In an interview with OmaSportsTV, the Fenerbahçe star reflected on a question he says he is often asked — whether he would have chosen England had the chance presented itself. In response, Osayi-Samuel pointed to the strong cultural grounding he received at home.
“My friends have asked me this question as well,” he said. “For me, I was heavily influenced by my country. My dad and mum really immersed me in Nigerian culture — going to Nigerian weddings, enjoying the food and everything. When you play football in England, you start playing with players who represent their countries, and you begin to see the value of playing for England.”
However, the defender believes there is more to international football than prestige alone. According to him, Nigeria offers something unique that goes beyond the pitch.
“In terms of football, some people might say playing for England is better,” Osayi-Samuel added. “But you don’t get the other side of it. The togetherness, the vibes — I don’t think you would see that playing for England.”
Osayi-Samuel’s comments underline the deep cultural connection and sense of belonging that ultimately guided his decision to wear the green and white of Nigeria on the international stage.
