FC Porto have suffered a brutal setback after striker Samu Aghehowa sustained a serious cruciate ligament injury to his right knee against Sporting.
The Spanish forward picked up the blow in first-half stoppage time and was substituted at the break after initially trying to carry on. Further tests have confirmed damage to the cruciate ligament, leaving Porto without one of their key attacking weapons for the remainder of the campaign.
Reports in Portugal indicate Aghehowa will miss the rest of the season as he begins a long rehabilitation process. The timing is especially painful because the 21-year-old had been pushing for a place with Spain at the upcoming World Cup. With this injury, those dreams are effectively over, turning a club setback into a personal heartbreak for the young striker.
Porto must now find solutions in attack without a player who had become central to their game plan.
For Aghehowa, the focus shifts to surgery, recovery, and returning stronger next season, while club and country wait for one of their most promising talents to come back fully fit.
