Morocco has honoured a Democratic Republic of Congo supporter, Michel Kuka Mboladinga—known as Lumumba VEA—by presenting him with a historic jersey, recognising his iconic presence during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Lumumba VEA, a lifelong fan of AS Vita Club and a former baker, became one of the tournament’s most memorable figures.
At every match featuring the Leopards, he sat quietly in the stands, arm raised, mimicking the posture of pan-African leader Patrice Lumumba.
His calm, determined demeanor and striking resemblance to the independence icon made him a symbol of the competition, despite the DRC’s exit in the round of 16.
Moroccan authorities acknowledged his significance with a special gesture. The Moroccan Ambassador to the DRC, Rachid Agassim, presented Lumumba VEA with a vintage yellow and green jersey of the Leopards of Zaire from the 1974 World Cup.
The jersey, steeped in history, reflects one of the country’s most revered football eras and connects contemporary supporters to the legacy of the team that represented Zaire half a century ago.
“This is a moment of pride for me and for the DRC,” Lumumba VEA said. The gift not only celebrates his dedication but also highlights the enduring cultural and historical symbolism of football in the country, where the Leopards remain a powerful emblem.
Beyond football, the tribute embodies a broader pan-African spirit. It was a gesture of respect, shared memory, and cultural transmission, honouring both the supporter and the enduring legacy of Patrice Lumumba.
Morocco’s recognition of Lumumba VEA illustrates how the Africa Cup of Nations can transcend sport, reinforcing unity and cultural pride across the continent.
As the DRC eyes a possible return to the World Cup more than 50 years after its debut, the story of Lumumba VEA serves as a reminder of the enduring connections between football, history, and identity in Africa.
