Moroccan midfielder Bilal El Khannous has opened up about the emotional toll of Morocco’s loss to Senegal in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final, admitting that reliving the key moments of the match is difficult but affirming that the experience will strengthen the team.
Sharing his thoughts on Instagram, the 21-year-old expressed his pride in representing his country and gratitude for the tournament’s organization.
“It is hard to find the words in such moments. I want to thank His Majesty for the great work done over the years for Moroccan football, and for organizing this edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, which was the most beautiful in the history of the competition. It was a great honor and pride to defend my country’s colors during this tournament,” El Khannous wrote.
He continued by highlighting the camaraderie within the squad.
“We lived a whole month together, full of wonderful moments, like one family. Thanks to the coach, his staff, and all the silent soldiers who worked with us. We gave everything we had until the last minute,” he noted.
Despite the disappointment, El Khannous ended his message with determination and resolve.
“Watching the clips is painful, of course, but it will make us stronger and more determined in the future. Thank you to all Moroccans for your support throughout the competition. You carried us from the beginning to the end. I am forever proud to be Moroccan and proud to wear my country’s colors. God, Homeland, King… Dima Maghrib,” El Khannous added.
Morocco’s defeat came after a dramatic and tense final in Rabat. A VAR-confirmed penalty on Brahim Diaz sparked anger from Senegal’s players and staff, who surrounded the referee and temporarily abandoned the pitch in protest. The delay escalated tensions in the stadium, with some fans threatening stadium staff.
Senegalese captain Sadio Mane intervened, urging his teammates to return to the field. When play resumed, Diaz’s penalty was saved by Edouard Mendy, keeping the match tied and sending it into extra time, where Senegal ultimately claimed victory.
