Egypt legend Wael Gomaa expressed deep sadness over the boos and jeers aimed at the Pharaohs during their Africa Cup of Nations third‑place match against Nigeria in Casablanca.
Nigeria won the bronze medal 4–2 on penalties after a goalless draw, but the atmosphere in the stands clearly left its mark on the former defender.
Speaking on beIN SPORTS, Gomaa said he felt as if “Egypt vs Nigeria was being played in Lagos, not Casablanca”, highlighting how strongly the crowd backed the Super Eagles. He explained that whistles and boos followed almost every touch by Egyptian players, turning what should have been a neutral or friendly setting into something far more hostile.
Gomaa was particularly hurt that the jeers even continued during Egypt’s national anthem, describing this as a very difficult and painful moment.
His comments reflect wider concern in Egypt about the treatment of the team at AFCON 2025, at a time when players and fans are still processing the disappointment of missing out on the final and settling for the third‑place playoff.
