Luke Mbete linked with French Ligue 2 switch to FC Annecy

Luke Mbete, the England and DR Congo centre-back at Man City U21, has been linked with a move to French Ligue 2 club FC Annecy.

The 22-year-old remains contracted to Manchester City’s development side until 30 June 2027, meaning any move would require an agreement between the clubs rather than Mbete leaving as a free agent.

Mbete has not made an appearance for Man City U21 in the current EFL Trophy campaign, with the team having played one possible match in the competition. He joined Manchester City’s under-21 setup in July 2020 after progressing from the club’s under-18 side.

The defender spent last season on loan at Northampton before returning to Manchester City’s development group in May 2025. He has also had temporary spells with FC Den Bosch, Bolton Wanderers and Huddersfield during his time with the club.

His loan at Bolton ended with a Football League Trophy triumph in the 2022-23 season, one of several honours Mbete has collected within Manchester City’s system. He was also part of the club’s Premier League title-winning senior squad in 2020-21.

Annecy’s interest would represent a potential move into France’s second tier for Mbete, but the rumour does not indicate that an agreement has been reached. He remains a Man City U21 player with a contract running through to June 2027.
