Noussair Mazraoui says he “really can’t wait” to begin Morocco’s Africa Cup of Nations 2025 campaign as the hosts open the tournament today, Sunday, against Comoros, carrying the weight of national expectation on home soil.

The Manchester United defender is part of a Morocco squad entering the competition as one of the leading contenders, shaped by their historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup and a commanding qualification campaign for the 2026 edition.

With the tournament staged across Moroccan cities, the challenge for Walid Regragui’s side is to convert belief and momentum into continental success in front of their own supporters.

Mazraoui, who joined up with the national team early and missed United’s most recent fixture, underlined the significance of the occasion.

“I really can’t wait. Playing the AFCON at home, in front of our supporters, is a unique opportunity,” he said, adding that the squad is fully aware of the expectations and intent on responding positively.

Morocco have not lifted the AFCON trophy since 1976, a long gap that has amplified public anticipation around what is widely regarded as a golden generation.

The opening fixture against Comoros at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium represents the first step in a campaign many fans believe could redefine the nation’s continental standing.

Mazraoui rejected the idea that Morocco can still be considered outsiders. “After our last World Cup campaign, we are a respected team. We are no longer viewed as a surprise, but as serious contenders,” he said, framing that status as recognition rather than pressure.

The 28-year-old also stressed the importance of composure across the month-long tournament. Drawing on his experience at club and international level, Mazraoui noted that handling tense moments would be decisive, insisting that players who remain calm in high-stakes matches often shape the outcome of major competitions.

Morocco’s squad blends experience and depth, with leaders such as Achraf Hakimi, Yassine Bounou, Sofyan Amrabat and Nayef Aguerd complemented by attacking options including Brahim Díaz. That balance, Mazraoui believes, gives the team the tools to navigate the demands of a home tournament.
