Jean-Charles Castelletto decision deepens uncertainty around Cameroon’s AFCON build-up
Jean-Charles Castelletto’s withdrawal from Cameroon’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations has sparked widespread debate, with conflicting signals fuelling controversy just days before the tournament begins in Morocco.
The 30-year-old central defender had initially been named in the list announced by new head coach David Pagou for the continental finals, scheduled to run from December 21 to January 18.
However, the Indomitable Lions’ staff later confirmed that Castelletto would not be available for selection, triggering uncertainty over the true reasons behind his absence.
Cameroon team press officer Thierry Ndoh first explained that the defender had been forced to pull out because of injury.
No medical details were made public, and the announcement was brief.
In response, Che Fondoh Malone, the 26-year-old defender currently with USM Alger, was recalled to the squad to fill the vacancy, appearing to settle the matter.
That sense of clarity did not last long.
Castelletto was subsequently spotted taking part in a full training session with his club on the eve of a domestic cup fixture, a match they went on to win 2-0 against Al-Shahania.
Images of the former Nantes player on the training pitch quickly circulated, prompting renewed scrutiny and raising fresh questions around the initial explanation offered by the national team.
Speculation soon followed. Observers began to wonder whether the player had misled the Cameroonian Football Federation, whether an administrative error had been quietly glossed over, or whether the defender was the victim of an unofficial decision taken behind closed doors.
The lack of clear communication only intensified the debate, with supporters and commentators demanding greater transparency.
The situation has unfolded against a backdrop of recent turbulence within Cameroonian football. In the weeks leading up to the tournament, several high-profile players, including André Onana, Vincent Aboubakar, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Michael Ngadeu, were left out after remaining loyal to former coach Marc Brys, who was dismissed by Fecafoot president Samuel Eto’o. Those decisions had already divided opinion, adding further sensitivity to Castelletto’s case.
A partial explanation has now emerged from a source close to the player, quoted by La Tanière 237, suggesting that the defender personally declined the call-up.
According to that account, the decision was communicated directly to the federation’s leadership and acted upon without delay.

Jean-Charles Castelletto has chosen not to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. The defender informed the president of Fecafoot, who decided to replace him immediately.
If confirmed, that version of events would place responsibility firmly with the player, while raising further questions about why injury was initially cited as the reason for his withdrawal.
For now, Fecafoot has not issued a detailed public response, leaving the matter unresolved.
Attention will soon shift back to the pitch. Cameroon have been drawn in Group F and will open their campaign against Gabon on December 24, before facing Ivory Coast and Mozambique on December 28 and 31 respectively.
As preparations continue, the controversy surrounding Castelletto serves as a reminder of the fragile atmosphere surrounding the squad, with unity and clarity likely to be tested as the tournament unfolds.
