Barcelona assess Castello Lukeba deal as Hansi Flick seeks defensive reinforcements

Barcelona are considering a move for RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba, with the France international reportedly identified as a priority target by head coach Hansi Flick.

The 23-year-old is said to be particularly admired by Flick as the Catalan club examines options to strengthen its defence. The potential interest was reported by journalist Ekrem Konur, although Barcelona’s ability to make a concrete approach will depend heavily on their finances during the summer transfer window.

Lukeba, who is of Angolan descent, continues to develop at RB Leipzig and remains under contract with the German club until June 2029. That long-term agreement means any deal is likely to be expensive, with a release clause in his contract set at 80m euros.

His estimated market value is currently 50m euros, meaning Barcelona could face a substantial financial commitment even if they were not required to pay the full value of the release clause. Lukeba’s contract situation gives Leipzig a strong negotiating position and makes the proposed transfer difficult for the Spanish club to complete without first raising funds.

Barcelona’s principal obstacle is their current financial situation. The club would reportedly be unable to submit a formal offer for Lukeba unless it completed a significant sale to generate the necessary liquidity.

Alejandro Balde and Jules Kounde are among the players whose possible departures could help finance an approach for the centre-back. Any decision on Lukeba is therefore expected to be closely connected to Barcelona’s outgoing business, with the club’s plans for the summer likely to determine whether Flick’s preferred defensive target can be pursued.

Lukeba is reported to earn an annual salary of 3,000,000 euros, equivalent to 1,950,000,000 FCFA, in Germany. Any agreement with the player would consequently involve not only a transfer fee but also the financial terms of a long-term contract.

For now, Barcelona’s immediate focus is their next La Liga fixture. The Catalan side will soon play Elche in the second matchday of the Spanish championship.

Betting company 1xBet lists Barcelona as favourites for that match, offering odds of 1.36 for a home win. A draw is priced at 5.50, while an Elche victory is listed at 7.50.

The match will take place as Barcelona continue to assess their squad and transfer options. With Lukeba apparently established as Flick’s preferred defensive addition, the outcome of the club’s player sales could prove decisive in determining whether interest develops into a formal bid.
