David Pagou removed André Onana and Vincent Aboubakar from Cameroon’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and took full responsibility for the move, insisting he wants a motivated and unified team for the tournament in Morocco.
Pagou arrived at Fécafoot headquarters on 1 December and immediately announced his 28-man squad, a gesture that signalled a new direction under his leadership.
He cut several high-profile names, including Onana, Aboubakar, and Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui, and triggered fierce debate across the country.
Many supporters accuse him of punishing influential figures in the dressing room. Others believe he wants to remove players who create tension in the group. Pagou, however, stands firm.
He says he wants a team fuelled by commitment and ambition as Cameroon moves on from its 2023 Africa Cup of Nations disappointment and targets a stronger campaign in 2025.
During an appearance on Talents d’Afrique, Pagou explained his methods with clarity and conviction. He said he values balance and cohesion above reputation and seniority.
He said he cannot fill the squad with too many veterans, because strong personalities can sometimes disrupt the harmony he wants to build.
He added that he must work with a clearly defined list, because international football demands strict selection choices: 28 players in the group, 26 on the match sheet, 11 starters, and 15 substitutes.
Pagou stressed that he makes decisions based on the needs of the team, not on public pressure or sentiment.
His approach confirms that he intends to rebuild the Indomitable Lions with courage and long-term vision.
He accepts criticism but continues to shape a squad that reflects his philosophy: energy, hunger, and unity.
Cameroon now enters its AFCON preparations with a refreshed identity and a coach who embraces responsibility for every call he makes.
