Yvan Neyou retires from international football with Cameroon
Cameroonian midfielder Yvan Neyou has announced his retirement from international football, bringing to a close nearly four years of representing the Indomitable Lions.
The 28-year-old made the revelation via his Instagram account on Tuesday, expressing heartfelt gratitude to his country.
Wearing this jersey and representing Cameroon has been a tremendous honor. Thank you for everything, my country. Good luck in the AFCON and in the upcoming competitions, Neyou wrote in his farewell message, underscoring the pride he felt during his time with the national team.
The announcement comes shortly after Neyou was omitted from the squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the first major selection under new coach David Pagou.
Pagou replaced Marc Brys, who was relieved of his duties by the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot), led by Samuel Eto’o.
The decision to leave Neyou out of the squad appears to have influenced his choice to step away from international duty.
Neyou made his debut for Cameroon on June 4, 2021, under coach Toni Conceição, featuring in a friendly against Nigeria.
Over the course of his international career, he earned 11 caps and became a reliable presence in midfield.
His tenure included appearances at two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, contributing to Cameroon’s bronze medal finish at AFCON 2021 on home soil and participating in the 2023 edition in Ivory Coast.
His last competitive outing came on November 19, 2024, in a 2-1 victory over Zimbabwe during the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, marking the end of his official contributions on the field for Cameroon.
Known for his disciplined defensive work and ability to anchor the midfield, Neyou leaves behind a legacy of professionalism and dedication that earned him respect from teammates and fans alike.
While his departure leaves a gap in the Cameroonian midfield, Neyou’s retirement also allows the squad to evolve under Pagou’s guidance ahead of the upcoming AFCON.
The timing of his decision highlights both the competitive nature of national team selection and the personal considerations players weigh when assessing their international careers.
As Cameroon prepares for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the Indomitable Lions will look to continue building on the foundations laid by players like Neyou, who contributed to the team’s successes over the past four years.
His departure marks the end of an era but also serves as a reminder of the dedication required to compete at the highest level of African football.
