Kaizer Chiefs confirm departure of young defender Gopolang Taunyana

Kaizer Chiefs have announced that 20-year-old defender Gopolang Taunyana is leaving the club, with the player reportedly linked with a move to Stellenbosch.

Taunyana was most recently part of the Kaizer Chiefs Reserves squad that won the DStv Diski Challenge. The club confirmed his exit on Tuesday, bringing his time with the Amakhosi to an end.

The defender was also a member of the Amajita team that enjoyed a successful period on the continent, winning both the COSAFA competition and the U20 Africa Cup of Nations.

Taunyana’s route into football was unusual. He first attracted attention as a teenage referee at Engen before demonstrating that he was capable of making an impact as a player. His progress eventually led him into the Kaizer Chiefs system, where he became part of the club’s reserve side.

According to FarPost, Stellenbosch are linked with a move for the defender, although no details of any potential transfer have been announced.

Kaizer Chiefs marked Taunyana’s departure with a message thanking him for his contribution and wishing him well in the next stage of his career.

Taunyana’s departure comes after a season in which the Kaizer Chiefs Reserves lifted the DStv Diski Challenge title. It also follows his involvement with Amajita, whose victories in the COSAFA competition and the U20 Africa Cup of Nations established the young defender as part of a successful generation of South African players.

The club did not disclose the destination of Taunyana’s next move, but Stellenbosch have been identified as a possible new team for the defender. Further details of the reported transfer have yet to be made public.
