Al Hilal moves to extend Kalidou Koulibaly’s stay amid transfer speculation

Al Hilal SFC have reportedly opened talks with Senegalese defender Kalidou Koulibaly over a contract extension, aiming to put an end to growing rumours about his potential free transfer exit next summer.

According to journalist Gianluigi Longari, the Saudi Pro League leaders are eager to secure the veteran’s future by offering a one-year extension that would keep him at the club until June 2027.

The move is seen as a clear signal of the club’s confidence in Koulibaly, whose leadership and consistency have been pivotal since his arrival in 2023.

Koulibaly, who joined Al Hilal from Chelsea for €23 million, has quickly become one of the cornerstones of the Riyadh-based side’s defence.

Renowned for his composure, strength, and commanding presence, the Senegal captain has adapted seamlessly to life in Saudi Arabia.

This season alone, he has already made 17 appearances across all competitions, contributing two goals and two assists — statistics that underline his importance both in defence and during set pieces.

At 34, the former Napoli star continues to demonstrate the qualities that made him one of Europe’s most respected defenders.

His current contract runs until June 2026, but Al Hilal’s management reportedly want to extend his deal by another year to fend off interest from potential suitors and ensure continuity within the squad.

Koulibaly remains one of the league’s highest-paid players, earning an annual salary of around €30 million (approximately 19.5 billion CFA francs).

Despite his age, his market value is still estimated at around €6 million by Transfermarkt — a reflection of his ongoing influence and durability.

Since moving to the Middle East, Koulibaly has embraced his leadership role not only at club level but also as captain of Senegal’s national team, where his experience continues to be invaluable ahead of next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

For Al Hilal, the defender’s experience and professionalism are viewed as crucial assets as they pursue domestic dominance and continental success.

His presence has helped steady a backline that blends veteran know-how with emerging talent, a balance the club is keen to maintain.

Al Hilal will next face Al Najma in their eighth league fixture of the season, as they look to continue their strong campaign.

But off the pitch, securing Koulibaly’s future could prove just as vital — a decisive move to keep one of African football’s most accomplished defenders leading from the back in Riyadh for years to come.
