Morocco’s Under-20 national team advanced to the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup after edging South Korea 2-1 in a tense round-of-16 clash.

Head coach Mohamed Ouahbi praised his side’s composure and tactical discipline in what he described as a tricky encounter against a team with “nothing to lose.”

“It was a tough game because we played against a side that didn’t start the tournament well and had nothing to lose,” Ouahbi told the Moroccan FA’s media channel.

“In the first half, they defended with fear because they knew we could hurt them on the counter. They tried not to leave us any space.”

Despite early nerves, Morocco maintained control and found crucial openings.

“Praise be to Allah, with calm and focus, we managed to create spaces and chances,” the coach said. “At first, we lost possession in silly ways — exactly what they wanted — so we told the players to stay calm, especially since we were already leading.”

Ouahbi admitted that youthful enthusiasm sometimes worked against his team.

“Sometimes young players want to finish the game quickly. Their enthusiasm is understandable, but this is the World Cup knockout stage. We’re not here to show off — we’re here to represent Morocco in the best possible way.”

He commended his players for their tactical awareness and fighting spirit but noted areas for improvement.

“We struggled a bit towards the end as they pushed with long balls, so we need to defend better against crosses and set pieces.”

Morocco will next face the United States on October 12 at 21:00 local time, with a place in the semi-finals at stake. The winner will take on either France or Norway.

Looking ahead, Ouahbi anticipates another stern test.

“We’re up against a very strong opponent. The United States are one of the favourites to win the title. We’ve played them three times and know them well. It’s going to be a tough quarter-final.”
