Timothy Weah has completed his move to Olympique de Marseille, a transfer heavily influenced by the advice and encouragement of his father, Liberian football legend George Weah.

The United States international follows in the footsteps of his father, who enjoyed a spell with the French club during his illustrious playing career.

Timothy, 25, revealed that George’s glowing recollections of Marseille and its football culture played a decisive role in his decision to join.

Speaking at his unveiling, Timothy explained the significance of his father’s connection to the club. “He played here, so it was a dream come true for me to play here as well.

He told me the city was amazing, as was the club. My dad told me about the fans’ passion. I would have been sad not to come here. My dad told me, ‘Go for it!’” he said.

George Weah, who travelled with his son to the south of France for the official signing, used the occasion to pass on wisdom gained from his own career at the highest level.

The 1995 Ballon d’Or winner spoke warmly of his time in Marseille, reminding his son of the city’s deep footballing roots and the club’s unwavering support from its fanbase.

The personal connection between the Weah family and Marseille added a layer of sentiment to the move. For Timothy, it was more than just a transfer; it was an opportunity to continue a family legacy at one of France’s most storied clubs.

His decision also marks a return to Ligue 1, having previously played for Paris Saint-Germain earlier in his career before spells in Scotland and Italy.

Marseille’s supporters, known for their intense loyalty and vocal backing, were among the factors that swayed the younger Weah. According to Timothy, his father painted a vivid picture of the electric atmosphere inside the Stade Vélodrome, describing the passion of the fans as something every player should experience at least once in their career.

The American forward now faces the challenge of making his own mark in a club where his father’s name still resonates. His arrival comes as Marseille looks to strengthen its attacking options ahead of the new Ligue 1 season, with expectations high both from the coaching staff and the supporters.

Timothy acknowledged the responsibility that comes with joining a club of Marseille’s stature, particularly given the personal history involved.

However, he expressed confidence and enthusiasm about the journey ahead. “It’s a great feeling to be here. I want to give my all for the team and for the fans,” he said.

With the season fast approaching, Marseille’s faithful will be eager to see whether Timothy can replicate some of the magic that his father brought to the club decades earlier.

While comparisons are inevitable, the younger Weah seems determined to carve out his own legacy, fuelled by the guidance of one of African football’s greatest ever players.
