Philipp Lahm has offered high praise for Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr, highlighting the Brazilian’s electrifying pace and tactical threat in attacking transitions.
The former Bayern Munich and Germany captain, known for his cerebral approach to the game, spoke admiringly of the Real Madrid star’s ability to destabilise defences with speed and technical finesse.
Though Lahm retired before Vinicius’s rise to prominence, the 2014 World Cup winner has followed his development closely.
“What strikes me most is his ability to execute his actions at incredible speed, even from his own half,” Lahm said in comments underscoring the Brazilian’s capacity to launch and finish counter-attacks with devastating effect.
The former full-back went on to compare Vinicius to two of the most iconic wingers he ever played alongside.
“His dribbling, his changes of direction… It reminds me of Robben and Ribéry,” he added, evoking the memory of Bayern Munich’s legendary wing duo, Arjen Robben and Franck Ribéry, whose dazzling footwork and direct play terrorised defenders across Europe.
Lahm, however, didn’t stop at admiration. He pointed out a tactical nuance that helps Vinicius maintain his high energy throughout matches—his limited defensive responsibilities.
“He can run 70 meters without slowing down and finish brilliantly. But his lack of defensive involvement leaves him with energy for those lightning breakthroughs,” Lahm explained, noting how this strategic positioning contributes to the player’s explosive runs during transitions.
From a defender’s perspective, Lahm also offered insight into how opponents might attempt to contain the 23-year-old, who has become a mainstay in Real Madrid’s attacking setup.
“We can’t really neutralize Vinicius Jr, but we have to prevent him from coming back towards the center. We have to close his angles and force him to go towards the touchline,” he advised, stressing the importance of steering Vinicius away from the most dangerous areas.
