Abubeker Nasir attracts Mechal interest after Sundowns return

Ethiopia winger Abubeker Nasir has been linked with a move from Sundowns to Mechal in the Ethiopian Premier League, with the rumour emerging after his return from a loan spell at U. Pretoria.

Nasir, 26, rejoined Sundowns at the end of June following his season-long loan. He had moved to U. Pretoria in September 2025, having previously spent time on loan at SuperSport United during the 2024-25 campaign.

The left winger has made 11 appearances in the Betway Premiership this season, scoring twice, while also registering one goal in four CAF Champions League appearances. He also scored once in the MTN8.

Nasir joined Sundowns from Ethiopia Bunna in February 2022 for a reported €250,000, after initially arriving on loan earlier that season. He has since been part of two South African championship-winning squads, with Sundowns lifting the title in 2022-23 and 2023-24.

His current market value is listed at €100,000. Nasir’s earlier record in Ethiopia included a standout 2020-21 campaign in which he finished as the Ethiopian Premier League’s leading scorer with 29 goals.

The reported interest from Mechal would represent a potential return to Ethiopia for the Addis Ababa-born player, although the move remains a rumour and no transfer has been confirmed.
