Etienne Eto’o, son of Cameroonian football legend Samuel Eto’o, has finally made his debut in La Liga with Rayo Vallecano, marking a significant milestone in his career.
The 22-year-old forward had been named in the senior squad multiple times this season but had yet to step onto the pitch.
That changed on Saturday when he was brought on in the closing minutes of Rayo Vallecano’s 1-0 defeat to Villarreal on matchday 25.
A long-awaited moment
Eto’o had previously been an unused substitute on four occasions this season, including Rayo’s recent 1-0 loss to Barcelona.
However, against Villarreal, head coach Iñigo Pérez finally handed him his first senior appearance, albeit with just three minutes remaining in the match.
Despite limited time on the pitch, the young striker was eager to make an impression.
He completed one of his two attempted passes, touched the ball three times, and attempted a dribble that did not come off.
While his impact was minimal, the moment itself was significant for a player who has been working hard to earn his chance at the top level.
Eto’o expresses his gratitude
After the match, Eto’o shared his emotions about the long-awaited debut, acknowledging the support he has received throughout his journey.
“I have been waiting for this moment for a long time. I am grateful for the efforts of my family, my mother, those who love me and who have helped me get to this level. It was worth it and I am very happy for that,” he told the club’s media.

He also praised his teammates and the coaching staff, highlighting the trust placed in young players.
Coach Iñigo Pérez showed that he counts on the reserves. I think that if we continue like this, it will help us a lot.
Impressive form in the reserves
Eto’o’s debut comes after a standout season with Rayo Vallecano’s reserve team, where he has been prolific in front of goal.
The Cameroonian U23 international recently scored his 18th goal in the Tercera Federación, Spain’s fifth division, further cementing his credentials as a promising talent.
His strong performances at the reserve level ultimately earned him his first minutes in Spain’s top flight, and he will now be hoping for more opportunities to prove himself at the highest level.
