Samuel Eto’o, president of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot), has taken his case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after being barred from contesting a seat on the Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
CAF disqualified the former striker from the election, citing ethical violations.
The governing body pointed to Eto’o’s association with online betting company 1xBet, which it deemed a breach of FIFA’s fair play regulations.
Additionally, his 2022 suspended 22-month prison sentence for tax fraud in Spain contributed to the decision, raising concerns over his eligibility.
Eto’o is not alone in his appeal. Congo’s Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas and Botswana’s MacLean Letshwiti have also challenged their exclusions.
Mayolas was disqualified due to a six-month FIFA ban in 2015, while Letshwiti was ruled out after failing to secure backing from his national federation.
With the CAF elections set for March, the CAS ruling could significantly impact the final candidate list.
