Tunisian coach Kais Yaakoubi alleges Algerian “pay-for-play” scheme

Kais Yaakoubi

Tunisian coach Kais Yaakoubi unleashed fiery allegations against Algeria during a press conference following Tunisia’s 1-0 loss to Gambia in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Speaking candidly about Tunisia’s struggles, Yaakoubi cited a lack of financial and logistical support as key obstacles to his team’s success. However, he saved his sharpest critique for Algeria, accusing them of securing dual-national players like Amine Gouiri through financial incentives.

“Do you think that dual nationals who join the Algerian selection, like Gouiri, come for free? A goalkeeper coach who did two CDMs with Algeria told me incredible things” Yaâkoubi questioned. He claimed to have learned this from a former Algerian goalkeeping coach who had been with the team during two World Cups, describing the revelations as “unbelievable.”

These accusations cast a shadow over the Algerian Football Federation, suggesting they allegedly use compensation to sway player allegiance a claim that could spark further controversy in African football.

Tunisia, now focused on redemption, will face Liberia in a 2026 World Cup qualifier on March 19, 2025. Meanwhile, the storm surrounding Yaakoubi’s comments is unlikely to settle soon.
