Egyptian premier league kicks off amid controversy over referee decisions
The Egyptian Premier League season has begun on a contentious note, with widespread public frustration over controversial officiating in the opening matches.
The outcry has raised concerns about potential bias and fairness, prompting calls for an overhaul of the current refereeing system.
In one of the season’s opening matches, Zamalek faced National Bank at Al Salam Stadium. A penalty awarded by referee Mohamed Adel allowed Zamalek to secure three crucial points.
The decision, however, ignited heated debate after a broadcaster allegedly leaked a transcript of a conversation between Adel and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) room.
The report suggested that Adel was initially reluctant to award the penalty but ultimately reversed his decision after consultation.
Following the leak, Adel became the subject of an official inquiry by the Egyptian Referees Committee’s legal panel.
He also filed a formal complaint, claiming the broadcast tampered with the conversation transcript and that there was an attempt to damage his professional reputation.
In response to the growing controversy, the Egyptian Clubs Association formally appealed to the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) to disband the current Referees Committee.
The association requested the appointment of a foreign expert to lead Egypt’s officiating, aiming to restore public confidence in the league’s integrity.
Adding to the tension, Al-Ahly Club echoed these concerns, emphasizing that the early signs of officiating did not bode well for the rest of the season.
“We believe the current officiating issues demand an international expert’s supervision to maintain fairness,” the club stated in a release.
The controversy extended to another match involving Al-Ahly and Zed Club.
In the final minutes, a penalty appeal by Zed Club was denied, securing Al-Ahly’s 1-0 victory.
Zed Club’s head coach, Magdy Abdel-Aty, expressed his anger at the decision, leading to his ejection with a red card.
He later criticized the officiating, noting that inconsistent refereeing could disadvantage smaller clubs without a large fan base.
Abdel-Aty said, “The referee undermined our efforts, refusing to consult VAR despite our legitimate request.”
The EFA has since intervened, launching an investigation into the incident, dismissing Referees Committee head Ibrahim Nour El-Din, and appointing Yasser Abdel Raouf as his replacement.
Many fans and officials are now hopeful that the EFA’s changes will address some of the officiating inconsistencies.
The backlash has also drawn attention from prominent Egyptian football figures, including former player and pundit Mido, who voiced his concerns on social media.
“If this trend of escalation in the Egyptian League continues, this season might end disastrously,” he warned.
The EFA’s decision to restructure its officiating system reflects the public and institutional desire for impartiality and consistent application of the rules.
Fans and clubs alike hope that the reforms will lead to a fairer and more transparent league season.
