Coventry City bring in Taiwo Awoniyi as Frank Lampard strengthens promoted squad
Coventry City have signed former Liverpool, 1. FC Union Berlin and Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi from Forest for a total fee of €10.5m, adding the Nigeria international to Frank Lampard’s squad ahead of their return to the Premier League.
Awoniyi’s move comes after Coventry secured promotion to the Premier League. The striker now joins a side preparing for the demands of top-flight football under Lampard, who will have another attacking option at his disposal.
The 10.5m-euro agreement takes Awoniyi away from Nottingham Forest, where competition for places had increased significantly. Forest’s attacking options include Chris Wood, Igor Jesus and Arnaud Kalimuendo-Muinga, leaving less room for the Nigerian international.
His departure provides Awoniyi with the opportunity to play a more prominent role at Coventry, although he will still face competition within Lampard’s team. Ellis Simms and Haji Wright are the other forwards named as rivals for attacking positions in the promoted side.
Awoniyi has therefore moved from one Premier League club to another, with Coventry adding a player who has previously represented Liverpool, 1. FC Union Berlin and Nottingham Forest. The transfer gives Lampard further depth as Coventry prepare to compete at the highest level of English football.
For Coventry, the signing is the latest indication of their intention to reinforce the squad after promotion. Awoniyi’s arrival also creates a direct change in the club’s attacking options, with Simms and Wright now joined by a striker who has experience of playing for established clubs in England and Germany.
The Nigerian’s place at Nottingham Forest had become more difficult to secure because of the presence of Wood, Jesus and Kalimuendo-Muinga. Coventry have moved to take advantage of that situation, completing a deal worth €10.5m in total.
Lampard will now have to decide how Awoniyi fits into his forward line. The new arrival will compete with Simms and Wright for opportunities as Coventry begin life in the Premier League.
The move also links Awoniyi with a club whose promotion has brought increased expectations. Coventry will be looking to establish themselves in the Premier League, while Awoniyi will be seeking to make an impact after leaving Forest.
Although the transfer changes his club, the challenge remains familiar: earning a place in a competitive attacking group. At Coventry, Awoniyi will have to compete with Simms and Wright, just as his opportunities at Nottingham Forest were affected by the presence of Wood, Jesus and Kalimuendo-Muinga.
His move to Lampard’s Coventry side is worth €10.5m and adds an experienced name to the promoted club’s squad. The former Liverpool, 1. FC Union Berlin and Nottingham Forest striker will now begin the next stage of his career with Coventry City in the Premier League.
