Wydad Athletic Club is preparing to take legal measures against certain social media influencers and pages accused of spreading false rumors about the club and its officials.
This action comes in response to requests from Wydad fans, urging the club to address the misinformation circulating online.
Hicham Ait Manna, President of Wydad Athletic Club, has confirmed that the club’s legal committee has been tasked with examining the situation.
“The committee is expected to review the case before forwarding it to Wydad’s legal counsel to initiate the necessary legal proceedings against those spreading false information about the club,” said a source close to the matter.
The rumors were ignited following the decision to move Wydad’s match against Chabab Al-Massira from Laayoune to the Bachir Stadium in Mohammedia.
Despite Wydad being the visiting team, some online influencers and bloggers took advantage of the venue change to create and spread unfounded claims against the club and its management.
“Wydad had no involvement in the decision to relocate the match from Laayoune to Mohammedia,” the source continued.
“The club adhered to the official scheduling decision made by the Professional League’s scheduling committee, and the match was relocated based on their administrative order.
Moreover, the host team was responsible for deciding to play the game behind closed doors.”
The club’s president emphasized that Wydad would not tolerate attempts to tarnish its image through baseless accusations.
He reaffirmed the club’s commitment to maintaining transparency and upholding its reputation, assuring fans that they are taking these matters seriously.
The case highlights ongoing concerns within Moroccan football about the impact of social media on sports organizations, with many calling for greater accountability for content shared online.
If Wydad proceeds with legal action, it could set a precedent for how sports clubs in the region address false information and defamation on digital platforms.
