Marc Brys expresses frustration over Cameroon staff turmoil

Cameroon’s emphatic 4-1 victory over Cape Verde on Saturday was overshadowed by internal staff issues that have left head coach Marc Brys visibly frustrated. Despite the on-field triumph in the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the tension behind the scenes was palpable, centering on a dispute involving the accreditation of the team’s technical staff.

Vincent Aboubakar’s performance, including a stunning double, led the Indomitable Lions to victory.

However, uncertainty loomed over the team as FIFA threatened potential sanctions or a forfeit if the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot) refused to accredit essential staff members alongside Brys.

In the end, Brys had to manage with a significantly reduced technical team. Only his assistant Joachim Mununga and physical trainer Christophe Manœuvrier were allowed on the bench.

The remaining staff, accredited by Fecafoot, watched from the stands, along with Ministry of Sports personnel, creating a surreal atmosphere of division among the support staff.

Internal Strife and Public Discontent

The rivalry between Fecafoot and the Ministry of Sports has been brewing for days, culminating in this awkward standoff.

Notably, the camaraderie between goalkeeping coaches Idriss Carlos Kameni and Alioum Boukar, despite their positions on rival staffs, underscored the bizarre nature of the situation.

During the post-match press conference, Brys didn’t mince words regarding the chaos that has plagued the team. Reflecting on the disarray, he expressed concern for the broader implications for Cameroon’s 30 million citizens.

“We can’t hide this. It must be easier to train, to play matches. There’s always something, it annoys me a lot of course.

We’re not going to start crying or fighting. We have too much work for that, unfortunately. But it is not productive for the 30 million Cameroonians.

That’s not productive, that’s clear,” Brys stated.

A Call for Unity

Despite the turmoil, Brys emphasized his commitment to his role, urging unity among the factions. “Once again, I am apolitical, I came here to do my job (…) Everyone must start working together,” he urged.

His call for cooperation is crucial as the team prepares for their next qualifier against Angola on Tuesday.

The uncertainty over the composition of the staff persists, leaving fans and players alike in a state of suspense.

The internal conflict within Cameroon’s football administration threatens to undermine the team’s efforts on the road to the World Cup.

As the Indomitable Lions continue their qualifying campaign, the need for resolution and unity within the administration is more critical than ever.

Brys’ candid remarks highlight the pressing need for collaboration to ensure that the team can focus on their performance and secure their place in the 2026 World Cup.
