Zambia eyes redemption against Sierra Leone in AFCON 2025 qualifiers
Zambia’s national football team, under the guidance of Avram Grant, is set to face Sierra Leone in a crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Tuesday, September 10. Following a disappointing opening-day defeat to Côte d’Ivoire, Grant is eager for a positive response from his squad.
In a pre-match press conference, Grant expressed his resolve to secure a victory and reaffirmed Zambia’s objective in the tournament.
“We need to pick up points and win the next match against Sierra Leone. Despite the defeat against a very good Ivorian team, I was pleased with the commitment and fighting spirit of my players,” Grant stated.
He emphasized the importance of the upcoming fixture, noting, “Tomorrow’s match will be different but our aim remains the same: to win and qualify for the AFCON.”
This match marks Zambia’s first home game of the qualifiers, and Grant is counting on substantial support from the local fans. “Coming home is always special.
Our fans have always been exceptional, and they have often played a key role in our victories.
I am convinced that they will once again be our 12th, or even 13th, player to help us achieve our goal of qualifying,” Grant added.
Team captain Lubambo Musonda also voiced confidence ahead of the clash, highlighting the significance of playing on home soil.
“It is an advantage to play at home. We have been through difficult times, especially in terms of points, but tomorrow is a new challenge, and we are ready to give everything to get a victory,” Musonda said.
In addition, Grant welcomed the return of midfielder Kelvin Kampamba and forward Ricky Banda to the squad. Kampamba had been absent due to family reasons following the death of his mother.
“Kelvin had to take time off after his mother passed away. He is a key player for us and has shown a lot of maturity in our recent games.
He is now back and ready to contribute to the team,” Grant remarked.
Zambia’s Chipolopolo are aiming for their second consecutive AFCON qualification after a notable absence from the continental tournament.
With a renewed focus and the backing of their home supporters, Zambia is determined to bounce back and secure their place in the next phase of the qualifiers.
