Yamal and Neymar headline Kings League World Cup as Saudi side Darbah face holders in Milan opener

Darbah will launch their Kings League World Cup campaign against reigning champions Los Troncos in Milan on 26 July, as a 16-team global line-up featuring stars Lamine Yamal and Neymar descends on Italy for the 2025-26 showpiece.

The tournament, staged in Milan from 26 July to 1 August, brings together the top 16 qualifiers from Kings League competitions around the world, in what organisers describe as the biggest event yet in the rapidly expanding football-entertainment project founded by Gerard Pique.

World Cup winner Lamine Yamal, who lifted the trophy with Spain, and Brazil forward Neymar are among a group of high-profile names fronting teams in this edition, which blends professional footballers with content creators and influencers.

Middle East and North Africa represented

The Middle East and North Africa region will be represented by two sides – Darbah, champions of the regional Kings League, and Fawaz – both targeting a strong Arab showing on the global stage.

Darbah’s opener against Spanish outfit Los Troncos, last season’s Kings League World Cup winners, is viewed as one of the standout ties of the first round of fixtures.

Fawaz begin their campaign a day later on 27 July, when they face Atletico Parceros, the team headed by Colombia international James Rodriguez.

The tournament format guarantees every side at least two matches in the opening phase. Teams that record two victories will progress to the knockout rounds, while any team suffering two defeats will be eliminated.

Darbah eye title challenge

Darbah’s representative said returning to the Kings League World Cup acted as a major incentive for the squad and insisted they are not in Italy simply to make up the numbers.

He said: “We feel very excited to be back in competition, and Milan is an important stop for us. We aspire to represent Saudi Arabia in the best way possible, and we believe we can compete for the title. We have a special team, and we seek to play a level of football that befits our fans.”

He added that the side draw inspiration from Morocco’s national team, who delivered an eye-catching run at the World Cup.

“Our closest example is the Morocco national team, not because we imitate them, but because they play with a collective spirit and never give up. Some may not see us among the favourites, but on the pitch everything is different. We play with our hearts, we fight for every ball, and we believe we can win against any opponent,” he said.

Fawaz target global success

Fawaz’s representative underlined that the team arrive in Milan with high expectations after claiming the Kings League title for the Middle East and North Africa region.

He said: “We produced performances that made our fans happy in the regional tournament, and we look forward to repeating that in Milan. We go into the World Cup with the same mentality we had in the regional Kings League, which is to try to win every match. We trust our team’s capabilities, and we believe we can achieve something big in this edition.”

He stressed that carrying Arab hopes in a competition of this scale is a responsibility the squad welcome.

“Representing the Arab world in a tournament of this size is a responsibility we are proud of, and we hope our participation reflects the true level of football in our region. Our message is that Arab teams are capable of competing with the best teams in the world, and this is only the beginning of what we can offer on the international stage,” he added.

Rising role for Arab content creators

The tournament will also see Saudi content creator Musaed Al-Fawzan serve as co-president of Fawaz, underlining the increasing involvement of Arab digital personalities in the global competition.

His role reflects the broader Kings League model, which mixes football with online entertainment and gives prominent streamers and influencers leadership positions within teams.

Pique’s project gathers pace

The Kings League, founded by former Spain and Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, is designed as an innovative global competition that merges traditional football with digital entertainment through experimental rules and made-for-streaming presentation.

Teams are fronted by a mixture of ex-players, current stars and high-profile content creators, and the format – with its fast-paced, interactive elements – has attracted millions of viewers since its launch.

On the back of rapid growth in multiple regions, organisers now view the Kings League World Cup in Milan as the flagship event of the system, bringing together champions from around the world in a week-long tournament that is among the fastest-growing football events on the calendar.
