World Cup 2026: Spain coach Luis de la Fuente labels Colombia genuine title contenders

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has elevated Colombia into the group of favourites to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, praising the South American side’s performances and admitting they have earned their place among the tournament’s elite.

Speaking ahead of Spain’s Round of 32 clash with Austria in Los Angeles, De la Fuente highlighted the quality, athleticism and attacking firepower of Néstor Lorenzo’s team.

“If I hadn’t included them amongst the contenders until now, I’m doing so now,” the Spain boss said.

The Spanish manager pointed to Colombia’s recent success against La Roja as evidence of their credentials.

“They’ve been one of the two teams to beat us. They’re of an extremely high standard, with fantastic players who are physically and technically very strong. You only have to look at their attack. They’re a truly great team.”

Colombia have impressed throughout the tournament, finishing top of Group K ahead of Portugal after remaining unbeaten in the opening phase. Led by Luis Díaz, James Rodríguez and Richard Ríos, Los Cafeteros have combined defensive discipline with attacking flair, strengthening their status as dark horses for the title.

However, despite De la Fuente’s glowing praise, Spain and Colombia cannot meet before the final, with the two nations occupying opposite sides of the knockout bracket.

Spain’s World Cup journey so far

Spain have enjoyed an unbeaten campaign, finishing first in Group H with seven points and without conceding a goal. Yet their path has not been entirely straightforward.

La Roja began with a shock 0-0 draw against World Cup debutants Cape Verde, dominating possession but struggling to convert their superiority into clear-cut opportunities. The result represented one of the biggest surprises of the opening week.

They responded emphatically by defeating Saudi Arabia, with Lamine Yamal marking his return from injury with a goal and restoring confidence within the camp. Spain then secured top spot in the group with another composed display against Uruguay, extending their unbeaten streak under De la Fuente to more than 30 matches.

The European champions now face Austria in the Round of 32, with De la Fuente insisting that his team remains among the strongest sides in world football despite criticism over their occasional lack of cutting edge.

“Spain are the best team in the world,” he declared ahead of the knockout encounter, while warning that the World Cup offers no guarantees regardless of reputation.

For now, though, the Spain coach has reserved some of his highest praise for Colombia, acknowledging that the South Americans possess every ingredient required to mount a serious challenge for football’s biggest prize.
